About Payfast
Payfast is one of South Africa's established payment gateways, used across a broad range of local retailers. For wine sold domestically it removes the usual friction of an international gateway: no currency conversion for the customer, no card that quietly gets declined, and a checkout the buyer recognises.
It matters most if you are a South African producer selling at home. If you are selling into the UK or EU as well, you can run Payfast alongside another gateway rather than choosing between them.
What the integration does
Pay without leaving your shop. Payfast's onsite payment engine runs the payment in your checkout rather than sending customers off to another site and hoping they come back. A redirect flow is available too where that suits better.
Wine club billing in rand. With the customer's agreement, their payment method is tokenised at checkout so club shipments can be charged when the cycle runs, without them needing to be there.
Customers can update their own card. A club member whose card expires can attach a new payment method to their subscription themselves, rather than emailing you about it.
Confirmations are verified. Payment confirmations arrive from Payfast directly and are signature checked before an order is marked as paid, so an order status reflects money that actually moved.
Test before you go live. Separate sandbox credentials let you run the whole checkout and club billing flow in test mode first.
Setting it up
You will need your Payfast merchant ID, merchant key and passphrase, which are stored encrypted. Enter them on the payments settings screen, test in sandbox mode, then switch to live. Get in touch if you would like a hand.
